Jiro is apathetic at face-value, in a way that can come off standoffish or rude. He keeps to himself most of the time, and you have to become really good friends with him to have himself open up at all. He has an blunt sense of humor that compliments his apathetic nature quite well.
However, he is still more of an extrovert in the sense that he enjoys himself more when he's with other people. He is very prone to feeling lonely, which is a problem for him because people are often times deterred by his cold demeanor. Many times, he'll sit in on conversations, but he won't really join in unless prompted.
He is a rational thinker. He wants to have control, especially of himself. For his emotions, he isn't capable of showing much, and if he wants to hide any that he has, he can easily. He envies people who express themselves freely because he doesn't really have the courage to let loose. He is very self-aware, and always critical of his own actions.
In school, he is a serious student and follows all the rules. With much persistence, he can be persuaded to do otherwise. He's smart and doesn't get distracted easily, but doesn't have a strong work ethic. If it's too much work for him, he'll try to look for an easy way out.

Jiro comes from a very well-known traditional family in Okinawa City. He has an older brother who is training to inherit the family firm. Much of the Arakaki family's child-rearing energy was focused on his older brother to prepare him for his future position. As a result, Jiro was given a lot more freedom to do what he wanted. His parents still hoped for him to pursue something manageable - something that would earn him a workable career. Even if it was something useless, they hoped he would choose something that he was passionate about.
Unfortunately, they failed to realize that passion was something that Jiro had a distinct lack of. Jiro was, in fact, a boring child. He didn't scream or cry very much, but also didn't get excited and laugh a lot either. He wasn't picky--he'd eat anything and had no favorite toys or favorite things to do. His parents worried that his lack of emotional responses would leave him without any interests or directions later in life, so they thought ahead and made him participate in many kinds of sports and music. Unfortunately, all of these pursuits fell flat. He didn't complain about doing them, but he didn't seem to derive much joy from it either.
When Jiro was just a few years old, he met another kid named Hiro (=babo-sparkle's character [link]) at the public park. Hiro had just moved in, and was living in a nearby area. They seemed got along well on their first day meeting, and Jiro's parents were shocked to see Jiro, who had never showed an interest in anybody before, actively play with and talk to Hiro. They encouraged Jiro to spend time with Hiro in an attempt to spur his "emotional development".
Jiro became really good friends with Hiro. They grew up together and went to the same local elementary and middle schools. Hiro was full of passion, and Jiro didn't have much at all, so it ended up that Hiro's drive became Jiro's as well. He started following Hiro in everything that he did, and a lot of his interests that he developed were because Hiro had initially been interested in them.
Jiro thus followed Hiro's decision to enroll at Hoshizora High, as well as his decision to choose Mythology as his subject. Freshman year, he joined the Archery club with him. He had had previous experience with Archery, since it was one of the many sports that his parents had tried to get him interested in. However, it was only because of time he had spent with Hiro in Archery did he really gain an passion for it.
Jiro has since noticed that he draws much of his passion from his time with Hiro, and is apathetic about other things. During his time at Hoshizora High, he decided to try be more independent. His started playing the piano on his own time, and developed a taste for Jazz music. He joined the tennis club just to try out a new sport.
